The Arbaeen, the march of love

The Arbaeen is the world’s largest annual religious gathering. Every year millions of pilgrims are making their way on foot to the holy city of Karbala in Iraq to commemorate the Arbaeen of Imam Hussain peace be upon him.
The Day of Arbaeen marks forty days after the day of Ashura, the day Imam Hussain peace be upon him was killed in the battle of Karbala on 61 AH/ 680 AD.
The Arbaeen, the march of love starts from the farthest point in southern of Iraq, from Ras Al-Bisha, a small Iraqi town located south of Al-Faw district in the Basra governorate.
The Department of Hussaini Rituals, Processions, and Organizations in Iraq and the Islamic world of the Imam Hussain and Al-Abbas holy shrines announced that the number of processions that participated in the Arbaeen for this year 1442 AH/ 2020 was 32,000 processions including 20 Arab and foreign processions from Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Nigeria and Britain.
This year the Iraqi government allowed a limited number of foreign pilgrims to enter the country due to the Covid-19.

Al-Abbas Holy Shrine issued an official statement on the number of pilgrims who participated in the Arbaeen commemoration from the ninth of Safar until the midday of the Arbaeen (the 20th of Safar) for this year 1442 AH/ 2020. The number of registered visitors according to the electronic counting system reached 14,553,308 visitors.
