On November 30, 2023, The Russian Supreme Court has declared the “international LGBT movement” an extremist organization, endorsing the Justice Ministry’s claim of inciting social and religious discord.
According to Russian criminal law, involvement or funding of an extremist organization carries a penalty of up to 12 years in prison.
Displaying symbols linked to such groups can lead to 15 days’ detention for a first offense and up to four years’ imprisonment for subsequent violations.
Suspected individuals may be listed as extremists nationwide, facing frozen bank accounts and disqualification from public office.
