In a historic move to boost its presence in global trade, Algeria has launched its first-ever air shipment of food products to Canada and several European countries. The operation began today, January 6, 2025, from Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers, marking a significant milestone in the country’s economic development.

This initiative is part of a strategic agreement between Air Algérie Cargo and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion. The agreement, effective from January 6, offers a 50% discount on shipping costs for exporters, cutting their expenses in half and enhancing their competitiveness in international markets.

A Government Push to Strengthen Exports

The reduction in shipping costs is a key step in Algeria’s broader strategy to support exporters and expand the global footprint of its products. By facilitating access to international markets, the government aims to position Algeria as a stronger player in global trade.

The first shipment included 4 tons of fresh vegetables and fruits, which were sent to Montreal, Canada. Speaking on the occasion, Radouane Aouf, Director General of Air Algérie Cargo, emphasized that this inaugural export is just the beginning of a larger push to open more international markets for Algerian goods.

Digital Innovation in Trade

To further simplify export procedures, the Ministry of Foreign Trade announced the launch of a new digital platform designed to streamline processes for exporters. Samir Djeradji, Acting Director General of the Ministry, called the platform a “quantum leap” for Algeria’s trade sector, enabling exporters to avoid lengthy administrative procedures and save time, particularly those in remote regions.

Global Ambitions for Algerian Products

This initiative underscores Algeria’s commitment to diversifying its economy and reducing reliance on oil revenues by promoting non-oil exports. The government’s strategic efforts to strengthen export capabilities and embrace digital transformation highlight its ambitions to make Algeria a prominent name in international markets.

The move to export food products to Canada and Europe not only opens new opportunities for Algerian exporters but also strengthens the country’s global economic position. This marks a promising start to 2025 for Algeria’s trade sector and its aspirations on the international stage.
